Default Joe Minton Mileage Kit

I put the Joe Minton mileage kit (for Mikuni 42) into my E-Glide. At the time my TC88 with V&H slip ons, big sucker, and gear driven kams (not sure which one) was pulling 28 to 36 miles per gallon. (Not good if you're touring.) After the kit I was getting 37 to 42 mpg. Not bad at all.

I have since added V&H Dresser Duals. The bike is MUCH better at pulling hills here in southern Idaho. Usually there is no need to shift down out of 5th and very often I don't even change the throttle. Amazing gain in power at or above 2,000 rpm.

The problem is I'm back down to about 36 mpg. This surprises me because the true duals are supposed to help... not hurt fuel consumption. Maybe the 10% ethanol is part of the problem. I dunno.

The Minton kit is:

Parts:

•17.5 idle jet, leaner than the stock 25 or 20.

•98 needle, leaner than the stock 97.

•50 accelerator pump nozzle way down from the stock 80. (Accelerator pump set to come on early and shut off late.)

•The main jet is whatever it needs to be and the stock one is generally correct.

Hey... the bike sounds much better, runs cooler out of the back cylinder and has better hill climbing power. Any ideas as to why the mpg got worse once the duals went on?

Thanks for your input.

Are the pipes different lengths? That will screw up a Harley's tune for sure.

True duels don't scavenge well in normal cruising RPM ranges, causing a reduction of torque over the factory head pipes, hence less efficency. They provide a little better power on top though.
