Default carbed twin cam 'coughing' question

Ok, I was having a problem w/ my '04 WG where the engine would 'cough' back through the carb when it was cold, or if I was cruising along with very little throttle. Spoke to an indy shop about it, as well as a couple of Harley guys, and the suggestion was that it was leaky intake seals. So, I pick up a new carb/intake gasket as well as a pair of intake seals. Spent a couple of hours this evening doing the change. The seal on the front cylinder was definitely leaking, so I'm thinking, "OK, this is the right thing to do". Get it all buttoned back up, fire it up, and adjust the idle. Everything seems fine, and it for sure seems to be running better. So, I go to leave from my buddy's shop for the ride home, and over the course of the 4.5 mile ride, I notice that it's still doing it. Doesn't seem quite as bad, but I'm still getting a cough back through the carb, this time mostly on the low throttle cruising.

Any thoughts? Bike has V&H Straight Shots and a Stage I A/C. I got it like that, and haven't opened up the carb to check the jets yet.

Sounds like the slide is coming up too fast. Does it cough when you throttle up, or steady cruising? Drilled slides and thunderslides will do this. Another thought, did the bike sit for a while with fuel in the carb?

Scott, maybe he needs a whole new top end???

i agree on the pilot jet as well. Scott, you think shimming the needle might help too?

Thanks guys, I'll give the pilot jet a try. Sometimes on throttle-up, sometimes just cruising at a very low throttle. I'll pick up a pilot jet when I go get the head washer that I had to order.

As Dan said, the needle can be shimmed to expose more of the main jet sooner, and help with throttle response as well.
I don't know about a top end, but maybe,............ a Timken conversion from Maryland???
hehehe.
