Default S&S cams not really good?

I've been reading more and more regarding performance upgrades and it seems that very few people are running S&S cams and they are rarely if ever recommended, whether it be this forum or others. I would think that a huge name in the HD performance industry like S&S would be producing top notch cams that people would want. Am I missing something or are they really not that good?

I have no experience with S&S cams so I wont comment either way. I think that may be the issue with some others here also.

I have used all kinds of S&S products during my 34 years of modifying bikes. NEVER had a failure or complaint.

I have S&S gear drive with 510g cams and love my set up. A very noticeable increase in torque and smoothness throughout the RPM range.

i have never ran s&s cams, i did have a s&s 107 in a titan, it ran very very good, One thing to consider, on these forums, theres a cult like following for some reason, certain brands are praised (woods,rb,dunlop) to name a few, and other are not considered because john doe from backwoods maine didnt use it, do some research, and youll see plenty of people are using ss...matter of fact, pm prodrag1320 on here, thats what he primarily uses in his shop, hed point you in the right direction. just avoid the bandwagon, it will consume you with the rest of these folks. chad.

I have experience with the 510 and 570. The 570 works great with the old SE Performance heads, right out of the box, SE flat top pistons for 95" and the .030" cometic head gasket; that build will make 100/100 every time. Andrews doesn't "make" S&S cams but does grind them to S&S specs. Andrews grinds many of the other aftermarket cams as well.

Basically my setup and yep made 99 hp and 104 tq. very fast and fun to ride!! no problems here at all with the 570g. underrated in my opinion.

S&S products work great and we use a lot of their products here.
One of there reps were here about 8 weeks ago.(ended up selling him an old S&S "L" series side-bowl, for his 93" Knuckle)
That said, the cams they have Andrews Products grind for them(as that is who we just recieved our brand new HMM .570 Express, cam, from Friday) historically come on later, than Bob Wood's or Doug Coffee's. Jim Lieneweber's cams have similar characterics of being able to generate torque quickly as well.
Zippers older line of street grinds had the same traits, of later delivery also.
You can install advance gears/keys to get them to "strike" better, or in Evo application, move the gear on the cam itself, and is nothing wrong with them, if that is what you want.
The quicker you can make torque, the quiker the bike will accelerate, and it is really that simple.(and better fuel economy)
Do not take this as bashing whatsoever, as it is not. Just passing across factual information, that we have gathered over the almost 3 decades in business.
Scott
