My wife's 1991 Sporty has an old Ederbrock Qwiksilver2 carb on it. I think it's a 1200cc (the jugs say 1200, but the VIN comes up as 883cc, and no way we can get history on it).
The carb will sporadically dump fuel. I've had it apart a number of times, it's been well cleaned and whatnot. The bowl does not leak. I've called Edelbrock and they said it's basically not supported any longer.

I'm about at the end of my rope. I'd like to hear if anyone has suggestions where to find what other carb models can be utilized.

poke around on Ebay for a OE cv carb.

or get a Mikuni 42 mm and jet kit.

I started to do that, but halted my search when I was told by my local HD dealer only a few specific CV's would work. I was told it had to be part number 27480-97a
Unfortunately I don't know enough about HD carbs that I'd be able to make a different one work.

Are most Sporty CV's interchangeable?

 

Im not on top of the sportty info. but the part #s are on the side of the carbs.

you may want to see if Screamin Eagle catologe has a cart for your bike.

 

Um, me thinks your dealer doesn't know much about "products" more than a few years old.


I'm big on the CV carb, I have them on my 2 evos, an 88 FXRP ( which got the CV transplant in 1990) and the 1995 FLHTC.
Both carbs are modded as described at nightrider.com. check the tech section and cv carb mod and tuning info is there.

The 88~90 CV carb was Sporty only, and had no accel pump. 1990 CV was introduced on big twins and has accel pump.

AFAIK the CV carbs used through the 90's were all the same but for jets and needle. So you should be able to buy any CV and swap jets to get it where you want. I have heard that pre-96 is better...i dunno.

They are great carbs, reliable, great for changes in altitude ( which is a drawback with the Mikuni, S&S.)

They use a spigot mount, if your bike has the flange mount the adapter is $10.
You'll probably have to change cables.

And these carbs can usually be found for $40 at swap meets. look it over, IF the idle mixture adjust jet still HAS the plug on it, then the carb likely hasn't been screwed up be someone.

You can't go wrong with a CV and they easily support over 90HP.

FYI, my 80" FLHTC has 42 slow, 165 main and n65c needle.
FXRP w/cam and heads 45 slow, 175 main and n65c needle
both bike get about 44 mpg on freeway.

I would guess that your bike would need smaller main jet.
