Engine not starting

Can I connect battery straight to the starter motor?
Hi everyone,
Just new to this site so you will need to go easy on me.
The problem I am having is with my 1989 sportster. I am no expert so need all the help I can get.
The bike has been rebuilt after the piston decided to give way. Everything was done properly buy a veteran harley enthusiast but he ran out of time and patience with my bike after not being able to get it to start. He said the wiring was needing replaced as it had been chopped and modified by previous owner.
He also thinks it might be the ignition.
I was wondering if there is a way to connect a battery straight to the starter just to get the bike to turn over so we could check compression etc?
Any help would be very much appreciated.
