83 FX 4 speed small mains shaft transmission seal see pix below.
Oil is leaking past this seal. Looks like getting the seal out it's self out is going to be a pain. It has been suggested that instead of trying to get the old seal out we just put a new one on top. It appears there is enough room and certainly enough leakage to keep the new one lubed.
Anyone ever try this? Suggestions, comments?

 

The main drive gear seals I've done were a pain to remove, but they came out. I wouldn't put another one "on top" of the old one. Getting the new seal in square takes some care, but if the main drive gear is clean of old seal material, debris, etc, it goes in there and won't leak.

 

The reason, that the oil is getting past that seal, is the fact that it is more than likely building up behind it, flooding more than it can contain.

Reason for that?
The MDG babbited bushing, has lost its fitment to the OD of the mainshaft.
Very common issue in those gearboxes.
Send us the mainshaft and MDG and we will install and size a new bushing, and you'll be rolling again, leak free.

Small world, I used to deer hunt in Munnsville and Stockbridge back in the late 60's and early 70's. My Step Mother Graduated from Stockbridge Valley HS in 1933 and is buried in the Cemetery there.

We are really hoping..... to not have to pull the trans apart.

We still hunt deer here.
Shot a 130 class, 9 pt. last year, during the regular gun season, and my son killed a nice 8 pt. with his bow, and another 8 pt. with his Marlin.
We hunt up over the hill, on Thurston's.
Coyotes were on the hit list this year, and killed 2 of those buggers as well.
