Default pops at idle

I just recently purchased a 03 1200 cuctom. strats /idles fine. When in neutral, ill flick the throttle, more times han not it will pop, sometimes stall. exceleration is fine, although when crusing at any steady speed, it will hesitate for a second, (like its out of gas) then its fine. it will do this 3 or 4 times during a 50 mile ride. any thoughts???

thanks!

Is it bone stock, or modified in some way, like different air filter or mufflers? If it is modified it is quite likely it needs a tune, simply to ensure fuelling is correct.

A pop can also be caused by a leak in the exhaust or on the inlet side. Our bikes come with very lean air/fuel settings, so that they can meet EPA regulations, but that makes them sensitive either to changes or things like air leaks.

How long has the bike sat idle before you bought it? Could be old gas & gummed-up carb. I'd dump fuel, refill w/fresh + Seafoam & see if it helps. If not - might need carb re-build/kit.

They will make it run leaner. It may be the carb needs adjusting, possibly a slightly larger idle jet. The idle air screw is under a small round cover on the underside of the carb. If you can see a brass screw, set inside a recess, that is it.

Iceman, I bought it about a month agao. The person I bought it from only rode it 600 miles over a 2 year period, I'm assuming it sat for a bit. i tried Sea Foam, it seeemded to help for a take full or so, however it's still doing it. I seem to be hitting the reserve at 75 miles too.....I would have thought more like 120ish no?? (2003, 1200 custom)
