Changing pipes for 1983 Ironhead
Hi there!
I'm looking for a new exhaust for my 1983 Ironhead.
The thing is, that there aren't exactly many choices for this bike. Other than the reeeeaaally loud ones.
So my question is, would maybe exhaust from a 1984, 85, 86 etc, fit my bike also?
Or is there a completely different fitting on these?
Another thing, also looking for other forward controls for my bike. Would forward controls from a Ironhead 1984, 85, 86 etc, fit my 83 model?
Or will there be issues with fittings here as well perhaps?
Thanks!

I had an '84 Ironhead for awhile and encountered a lot of fitment issues like you're describing. Seems there was quite a bit of transition going on in this time period, but that's just my take on it. Mine had drag pipes on it when I bought it. S&S carb, no baffles, and ran like crap. I lollipopped the straight pipes and that quieted it down substantially and after rejetting the carb, it ran tons better with a little back pressure. I moved to town for a new job and started leaving for work at 6:00am, so I added some slip-in screen baffles to the pipes and rejetted again and that setup was even quieter. If you don't have any luck with aftermarket pipes, something along those lines may be worth considering.
