Hi,
New here, so forgive any wrinkles in my post :o.....
I'm recommissioning my 1994 FXDL and have been working through some issues. It was last run in 2011 just before the family grew by +1. It's now time to get back to business. We changed the brake fluids, they were pretty gunky and brown....
The main issue however has been the CV carburettor. Firstly it was pissing fuel everywhere. Turned out to be the accelerator pump diaphragm, that's been replaced and the non return valve on the accelerator jet was seized, that's sorted. Also the main jet was checked and the slide seemed OK etc. So then plenty of oil in the bores and crank it over. All OK. Next put in the plugs and start up. Clouds of smoke from the oil, that cleared and the engine ran fine.....
But.... after a bit of warm up the engine refuses to run when the choke is put in more than half way. Hmmm???
Any suggestions on the 'next layer of the onion' where to check next.
Kindest regards,
Kara.

My Tour Glide is just becoming too much of a bike for me. I have put a lot of work into it, so I decided instead of a smaller bike, I would just try to get this one to more like a FLHS, and hopefully that would be enough. It seems pretty straightforward, remove the Tour Pak, lowers and fairing. I already ordered a nacelle from a FLHS, so I just need to find the headlight bucket and light (I think I have one stashed in the garage). If anyone has done this and can think of any tips or things I may miss, I would love to hear them. Bike is a 89 FLTC-U.

Hi everyone,

Having problems narrowing down the issue with my 1340 Evo.

Issue: In first and second gear if I get on the throttle hard, my Evo hesitates. If I roll on the throttle she's fine. It feels like a VOES issue but I haven't confirmed.

Configuration:
1. Evo with 27k miles
2. Mikuni HSR42 - Main Jet: 167.5, Pilot: 25, Accelerator: 50, Needle: 97 on 3rd/middle clip
3. Ultima 53-644 Ignition - Tuned to all "off". Dual Fire Ignition.
4. V&H Short Shots exhaust
5. Andrews EV27 Cam

Here's what I've checked/done:
1. I went up to a 60 and 70 Accelerator on carb, Then back down to the 50 and checked to make sure it was engaging from cracking open the throttle and disengaging between 2/3 and 3/4 throttle.
2. Tried going down a clip and even went to a 96 needle on the carb. Ran great, but still hesitated. I make one change to the carb and run it, etc. My bike loved the 96 needle but was definitely rich.
- Idle Air Screw is out 1.5 turns and feels spot on.
3. I've ordered a new VOES module. I disconnected it and still hesitates. We'll see what happens after I get the new one installed. It's in transit.
4. Changed the plugs out. They were pretty black so she's running a bit rich but was running great before all this started. I have Platinum plugs in and gapped to .40. I had nickel plugs in before.
5. Checked for intake manifold leak. Replaced the seals two years ago. No leak.
6. Checked Ohms on the plug wires. All within spec. Actually on the low end which is great.
7. Replaced Regulator and Stator back in 2024 at 20k miles.
8. New battery back in Oct 2025. I keep it on a tender when I'm not riding.

What I haven't done:
1. Checked petcock and filter for debris/flow. The carb squirts fine so it doesn't feel like it's a delivery issue. No hesitation when going WOT from idle in neutral
2. Checked Regulator and stator.

Not sure what else to check. Any idea's would be helpful.

1998 Harley Road King Classic Evo. My bike has sputtering and other issues that indicate that I need to replace the intake valve gaskets. However, I cannot seem to find any videos on how to reach and get through all of the stuff in order to get to the gaskets. Does anyone have any suggestions or videos on how to reach them. I opened this up and realized that this is well beyond my pay grade. Here is a photo of the furthest I dated to dive.

Hello,

My bike is a Softail from '87. Bike starts well (kickstart) and runs well also. Only the spark plugs, in my opinion are a bit white, with some deposits on them, think I run a bit lean.

> Carb is Keihin CV, (could be the original one). I run jets 48/180, needle raised 3 mm (1/8 inch) mixture screw 2,5 turns out,
> Air filter is open, foam under the steel mesh,
> Exhausts with some baffles inside,
> Stock heads.

See pics.
Thinking to raise a bit more the needle. What is your opinion?

Thanks

I don't ride as aggressively as I did when I was younger. I appreciate the Super E carb, great for hot rods. I've had it on other bikes and I like how simple it is to tune. Now days it's a little too sensitive for me. I'm a big fan of the CV40 carb, I like that it's smooth and forgiving.
Now here is the issue, I'm strongly thinking of building (or maybe just buying) a bigger displacement engine. I am considering the S&S 96" which will be okay for the CV40. I'm also looking at some larger motors like a 107", 111" or 113". A lot of research I've been doing says that the CV40 carb is only good for motors up to 100".
So here is my question . . . will the CV40 be sufficient for the larger displacement motors? Who has done it?

I am setting up a new SMT front rim for my 1999 FXSTC...

I got the tire mounted and a new rotor installed - I move to install the new rim on the bike and I find that the original spacers for the stock rim are too short.

Basically, the hub on the new rim is narrower than the stock, spoked rim.

This is an unanticipated challenge and SMT is researching what I specifically need to get this bike back on the road.

While waiting on their guidance, I've ordered a variety of axle spacers and shims hoping to get lucky. Ideally, I guess I need a large-throat caliper to measure the actual difference between the two hubs. Then it's just math.

Open to any experienced advice and direction - thanks!

Now that the Electra Glide is roadworthy again, I'm back to thinking about the NW Arkansas road trip I was talking about a little while back in the Peace and Quiet thread.

The way things look, Saturday July 18 would work out well.

I'm looking to find a spot for lunch, then spend the rest of the day riding the area. A guy told me about Pig Trail Bypass Country Cafe, which looks promising. But really anything in the area will do, so if you've got a recommendation, by all means spill it.

Who's in?

Hi everyone,

I am a new Harley owner from Denmark and I just bought a 1991 Electra Glide with the Evo engine. It starts and runs fine, but I have an issue where it starts smoking at idle after about 10 seconds,

when the engine is at operating temperature.

I have read that these engines can be sensitive to overfilled oil tanks. I think my bike has an aftermarket dipstick and I do not trust the markings. On the attached photo you can see my dipstick with a ruler. The mark in the middle is at 3.5 inches and the total length is 5.7 inches.

Right now, when the engine is hot after a ride and leaning on the jiffy stand, the oil level is exactly at the 3.5 inch mark. Can anyone confirm if this is a normal and acceptable oil level for this bike? I want to rule out overfilling before looking into other causes for the smoke at idle.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Short version... 1996 EVO 80" stage two. Just had the cyls bored .020 over, 10:1 domed piston , full valve job and some head porting. Also has SE slip-ons, intake, and Crane ignition and cam. CV40 carb, having trouble dialing it in. Presently it has 48 pilot jet and CVP needle, and 195 main jet. It runs idles well, starts right up, but sucks at parking lot speeds. Mileage seems not so good, but I haven't calculated it.

It is uneven at parking lot speeds, kinda sputters a bit. Not fun to ride this way. I suspect a lean condition. I tried the standard mixture screw adjustment to turn in until it stumbles, but it really doesn't stumble much. So I am trying just setting to an arbitrary setting, 1.5 turns out, and clicking out 1/6 of a turn now and then to see what happens. So far I got it to where it is now, but it's not right just yet. So I think I am at close to 2 turns out on the 48 jet, but the plugs look lean to me. I am still new to this, so what that's worth.

My issue in my head is 2 turns out on a 48 jet ( two sizes up from stock) seems like it shouldn't be lean to me, or at least what I expected. So, am I lean, and if so, could someone explain this to me?

I am confident I have no intake leaks, and the carb is like new clean, so no need to go there. Also, these are Denso pointy electrode plugs, gapped at .038"
