It is likely because the page that was is no longer.
When you click to the thread, that button is to a page, but if reading a while, more pages update, so that page simply doesn't exist as it did.
In the wee hours it will happen less, in peak hours it Will happen more.
With all the new folks we been getting, it will happen more.
At least, this is what I've found to be true with New Posts.
