OK.. I have a few bolts starting to rust, those are easy to replace. But what kind of bolt to use? Strength wise.
Then there is my forward controls are pitting with rust, and I have one extra nice blemish. Would it be better to re chrome? Or paint?

Depending on what is being held together, grade 5 bolts will suffice for most everything on a Harley.

 

That's about what I was thinking.... guess I'll look for stainless...

Beware some of the stainless steel bolts you get from the local hardware store. Some of it is very cheaply made, not very strong and will still rust.
Good Cad plated steel Grade 5 bolts are better in most cases.

 

Buy Dremel and wire brush for it! I clean rust all the time, use drill and Dremel.
