1970 flh fork tube rebuild
#11
hey guys, pulled my upper & lower fork bushings, made a puller from an 1 3/4'' O.D. washer ran a 20'' piece of 1/2'' allthread rod through the washer, it was loose enough to lay on its side as I fished it through the center of the bushing, then pulled it back against the underside of bushing, slid a plate down the rod and against the top of the fork tube and threaded a nut against it and pulled the bushing out as I tightened the nut this worked great on the upper bushing . tried it on the lower bushing and the cussing started, seems there is a land that acts as a stopping point for the lower bushing. as I fished the puller through the bushing it wouldn't set square against the bottom of the bushing allowing it to be pulled, I dressed the edges of the washer down until it actually pulled into, and jammed against the inside of the bushing, long story even longer, it bent the washer so I made a heavier version from some 3/8'' steel, and it did the same jamb up but I was able to finish pulling it out. destroyed the bushing but didn't score the tube, not to scientific, but it was about wining at this point. QUESTION: since removal was such a bitch setting the new ones won't be easy, has anyone built a tool, or know of a set to use for this job? pineknot
