Sportster steering "detent"

Sportster steering "detent"
Medium speed (40) front shimmy fixed by dealer tech "tightened neck bearing" but resulted in steering "detenting" at center. Bike tracks fine but requires slightly more pressure to get over "hump" for steering input. Dealer says they'll have to tear into (high labor time) to diagnose as they don't recognize this.
Would like to help expedite the diagnostic process maybe giving the tech an informed hint. Might steering head bearings be the problem?

RE: Sportster steering "detent"
G'day mate,
It definately will need new steering head bearings, even though they tightened them the damage was already done, there will be dents in the outer race caused by the rollers moving around when it was all loose. having the right tension fixed the wobble but you are up for bearings now. Keep 'em tight, check every 5000 and they will last for years. If they are too tight the bike slowly "rolls" from side to side at about 40 mph, kinda feels like you can't keep it straight after 1 too many beers. Too loose and you get the shakes.... as ya know.
hope that helps a little
