Default Removing Fork cap nut

Installed lower sliders on my 08 Softail. Fairly easy job. Only thing now is filling the forks. Whats the trick to loosening the cap without messing up the chrome. Anyone know what size the cap is. I assume metric.

Thanks jim

Not off hand, but just measure across the flats of the cap to get the size.

I've always used a Ford Wrench...it puts the pressure on the flats of the cap, not the corners. The fork caps don't require a great deal of effort to loosen...or tighten.

That tool would do the trick. I only have a wrench that goes to 1 1/8. Not big enough. Also have sockets but the handlebars are in the way. I'll have to get a wrench at work tomorrow. Thanks

I use a crescent wrench with electrical tape on it to keep from marring. Works nice.

Use a 1 3/8 inch socket. You will appreciate the socket over an open end wrench when you put them back in.

Thanks all. I may try the wrench with duct tape or electrical. Hate to pull the bars.

I used a 35mm socket and a friend to help push the cap into the threads and get it started.

How did you change the lowers without pulling the springs and dampening rods?

Get 1 3/8 fork cap socket. Motion Pro, etc. sells them cheap. In a pinch I've used the bike supplied 36mm axle wrench
