I have a 1999 FLSTF. The front end is all new except for brake disc. From 45-50 mph the front end shakes but that is the only time it does it. Last night when i was riding it started shaking really bad, i just coasted thru it, it didnt stop shaking until i stopped about 200 yards later. Anyone know where this could be coming from?

 

How long ago did you rebuild the front end? If you are just getting back on the road with your bike, then it could be something out of adjustment or incorrectly assembled. There are many things that could cause the front end to shake. An out of balance wheel, the fall away may need adjustment, loose fasteners, misalignment, if you had the job done at a dealer or shop take it back to them. If you did the rebuild yourself, go over the front end and check out the assembly work. As far as nailing it down to one item when the entire front has recently been rebuilt, and not being able to lay hands on it, that would be difficult to do. My best wild guess, would be to check the fall away. Also try a search for front end shake.

 

A shake at a certain speed generally means tire balance. The fact it would not stop until you were stopped sounds like the front caliper might be seized and heating up the rotor. This causes pulsing of the front brake with shaking felt in the front end. Check for heat after riding it a bit and if ok definately get the tire balance checked.

Thanks i will check all these things out. I know that the fall away is not what it should be, i was thinking that could be the problem. As for the tire balance i thought that we had that done but i will certainly do it again. I had a mechanic tell me to check the swing arm, could that really have anything to do with it?

 

While your fall away may not be exact, it is not the source of the shaking. It acts as a damper to tame any slight problems you may have . Generally always caused from the front wheel, tire balance or tire tracking . If you feel the shaking in your ***, then yes check all the rear end components.

Thanks to all! I went ahead and forked over the cash and put it in the shop. Turns out it was a mixture of a couple of things. Fall away, front tire, and the rubber gromets on the risers. Now it is smooth. Thanks again
