Smile 2003 FATBOY - Carb vs Elec Ign

Hi all. I have a 2003 Fat Boy with carb. is there any benefits or drawbacks with this as a significant number of models of this age have elec ign. I have had no problems and I am happy with the carb model but I am interested in the more experienced Harley owners opinions on this! Many thanks. Dave

If you mean electronic fuel injection, there is a significant in performance, start up and cold driveability. Driving a carb bike illustrates to the EFI riders you are one with your machine. Idle is much different and sounds better.

Ha, ha!!! Agreed. I have one of each and the carbed bike is much more cold-blooded than the injected one. The two bikes are so different, the differences in performance are greater than just the carb vs. injection so can't help with that part of the question but I enjoy riding both of them.

Have owned two carb bikes 2000 and 2004 Fatboy and both have been great. Don't get the FI thing but never owned one.

I haven't seen any benefits of gas burning lights vs electric, but I do like round wheels.

If you like to tinker, get a carbed bike. If you prefer a bike that you can ride from Death Valley to Pike's Pak on and never touch the engine, EFI is the winner.

I will never own a non-EFI touring bike. Between the wife and I, seven of out eight Harleys have been EFI. All have been electronic ignition. All have been modded for intake and exhaust, and all have had custom-fit Corbin seats. We rode home from Alaska down the Alcan on our current ones, without issue. We've also ridden up Pike's Peak - the EFI was fine, the wife not so much!

This bike is my first EFI. My panhead and shovelhead were carb and I prefer my new one, in that area. I don't have to tinker with my EFI, like did my old bikes. But the only thing I miss is the way they idled.

Actually, your bike has electronic ignition, and everyone that has responded to you has probably, correctly identified your question as "Electronic Fuel Injection."
