Would it be ok to switch my 2000 electric glide from belt to chain drive? I would like to put a wider rear tire on it without spending big bucks. What would be the down fall of this? if any
I looked into this for my 2000 RK. My local indy shop (great guys, and do great work) quoted me about 1100 dollars parts and labor. Parts weren't that expensive, coming in around 400 dollars, but the swap is pretty labor intensive due to finding or fabbing the right spacers to keep the wheel centered.
The down side is even a quality chain won't last as long as a belt, chains are messy, and you'll be adjusting a chain pretty often which can be a pain on a bagger.
The up side is being able to fit a wider tire, and you can change a chain without disassembling your primary.
You don't mention how wide you want to go, but if you're talking just a tire size or two (about all the wider you'll want to go with the stock wheel), look into the late model belt and sprocket conversion.
