Peacemaker pipes & National Cycle service.

Peacemaker pipes & National Cycle service.
I put a set of Peacemaker pipes on my 95 Flht a few years back.
It originally had a set of drag pipes which were ungodly loud.
These pipes have an electrically powered, cable actuated butterfly to meter the amount of exhaust gasses that flow through or around the baffles.
I bought these because I work at oh my god in the morning and wanted to show a little consideration for my neighbors.
When I first got them, one of the parts in the actuator mechanism was stripped out where the cables connected.
They sent me a new lower portion of the mechanism.
The pipes were generally good overall.
They did have a tendency to get stuck in position if you did not open or close the butterfly often enough.
You can fix this by inserting something far enough into the pipe and moving the butterfly.
I had no intention of ever replacing them.
The actuator mechanism stripped the threads that move the cables.
This setup is still a current product
I called National Cycle to order the part that had been stripped.
They would not sell it to me.
They would only sell the entire mechanism for $225.
They would not sell me the lower portion of the mechanism.
The part I need is probably less than $30.
Remember that they did send out the lower portion for the original that was defective. So it must be available to them.
Well, screw National Cycle.
I pulled the pipes and mechanism off.
I won't be buying any more products made by National Cycle.
I replaced the pipes with a set of megaphones from KCint.com for $179 shipped.
This is less than the cost of a new actuator.
Wow. What a difference in exhaust tone.
I was amazed at the deep rumble at idle.
You can watch a video of the pipes at kcint.com
They actually sound better in person than they do in the video.

I have a similar problem but the electric motor has failed in mine. National Cycle sent me a new motor when the first one failed but will only sell me an entire actuator now that the warranty has expired. I took the motor apart and found the brush holders fell apart. Unless you want to spend $225 a year on these pipes, stay away.

I don't think they are looking for freebies. Just the part they need. If they send them out for warranty service why wouldn't they sell it as a replacemnet part after warranty... Just greedy.
