RE: Which Harley for a tall guy?
Pass on the sportster. It's that "monkey/football" thing.
You'll probably be most comfortable on a cruiser (dyna or softtail) with forward controls. I rode an FXR for many thousand miles that way. On trips I used my t-bag for a back rest and leaned back and it was like being in a recliner.
Oddly, the touring bikes don't have much leg room, which is why you see them all equipped with highway pegs. I have the pegs on my Road Glide set so that I can not only use them for footrests, but I can put my heel on the floorboard (I have the floorboard relocation kit) and my toes on the footpeg, which I find VERY comfortable.

My kid has an 883 and I've ridden it several times. It's a great bike that fits her well and is a hoot to ride, but at 6'3 and 245 it's a bit cramped for me.
Wife has a Softail Custom- fits me a little better, is very easy to maneuver, but still not "roomy" enough for me. Also, the smoothness of the counterbalanced engine ain't my cup o' tea.
My Electra Glide fits me perfect. I checked out numerous bikes before buying and nothing suited me like the Glide. Once I sat in the saddle I knew it was the one for me. It has the ride, the room, and the vibes I want in a motorcycle.
If you want a tourer, get one of the big, roomy Electra Glides. There are plenty of used ones out there in your price range. If you want a cruiser, the Wide Glide is about as good as it gets for the tall/big rider and is IMO the best looking cruiser Harley makes.
Good luck!
