There is in Wisconsin. You have to pay it, when you register your vehicle.

Sure as hell is in Idaho. And if they catch you understating the purchase price in order to fraudulently reduce your sales tax, look out.

I've paid "sales tax" on EVERY vehicle that I have ever bought, and that's been quite a few as I'm on my 66th trip around the sun. Some states may/might be different but here in Michigan that just how it is and they ( the state ) collect tax every time the vehicle "re-sells"

You are going to pay taxes whether from a dealer or from an individual so the ones saying different are fos.

The question I have is why would you go to a dealer for a used bike?

Stay out of the dealer.

You can buy for thousands (depending) less from a private sale.

There can be some decent deals to be had on used bikes at a dealer, but you'll almost always get your best price from a private seller. What you get from the dealer is convenience and possible legal recourse if you buy a turd.

The bit about no sales tax on ptivate sales is BS in every state I've lived in - check your local laws. Do NOT get caught tyring to cheat on that, they'll screw you if they catch you.

I've bought private sale bikes and I've bought from dealers. Been happy both ways. Just shop smart, know what you want and what it's worth, and be ready to walk away if the deal sucks.

Good luck!

By your calculation, if you paid cash for the bike you wouldn't have to pay any taxes or license fees. Now, if your $5K down is a trade in, you would pay taxes on the difference between your trade and the cost of the "new" bike but the license fee would remain the same (at least in Washington State that's how it works). The state gets the additional taxes when the trade is sold.

Unfortunately...no. As it worked out I got way too many speeding tickets (3 in the first 4 months that I owned it!...all 50-60 over the speed limit, and of course I actually believed that I was invincible [thank you Lyndon Baines Johnson]).
