Every Oil Thread
Small rant but this drives me nuts,
When talking about oil the W stands for WINTER ! Not weight
10w-40 for example the 10w bit (W = winter, not weight or watt or anything else for that matter) simply means that the oil must have a certain maximum viscosity/flow at low temperature. The lower the "W" number the better the oil's cold temperature/cold start performance.
Sorry for the rant that's all

Ya,, but Dude people around here have been calling oil by weight for decades,, Generations!
Trust me,, I live in Minn where winters are the real deal even back in the day when we did say Winter oil is was always "Winter Weight".
So I'm supposed to walk into my Harley dealer and ask for 40Winter oil,, or 50Winter oil to run in my bike all summer?

Tut, tut...
Perhaps I should have said...
Nothing like starting another oil thread to whine about some small bit of controversial nomenclature that gets you all bent out of shape every time an oil thread happens.
Is that better?
Lol, just busting your chops.

OP: Don't get to embarrassed. We all make mistakes.
The reality is that even though it does represent the old viscosity weights. It is not what most think. For example the 10w30 has nothing to do with the viscosity anymore. 10w30 is about 7 on the scale of viscosity.
What it means is that it will protect as if it was 10 weight and if it was 30 weight. All oils from mineral to synthetic are so highly engineered currently that they bear no resemblance to oils 30 years ago and back.
There are zero viscosity oils now that will protect even a 600HP diesel motor.
