I know it's weird to ask. Long story short I used SYN3 for a final time on Sunday doing a change in all three holes. I was with a friend who is a former Harley master tech. He told me he only puts 20oz in the transmission. I thought about it yesterday and I realized he has a 97 and I have a 13 ultra. Sure enough it was not enough so I poured an additional 12oz of syn3 into the tranny. I'm asking because it was an open bottle that my father in law used about a year ago when he was traveling through. I poured it and it looked like clean syn3. For what ever reason I stuck my nose in the bottle and it smelled faintly of gear oil. It was very faint but it just has me slightly worried. I've smelled mobile one and it smells sweet. So anybody ever smelled this stuff? My next change will be better and cheaper crap than syn3.

 

What is fear oil?

OK,now thats clear,I went out to the garage and sniffed some Sync 3 compared to Mobile I and Sync 3 does not have a strong smell compared to Mobile 1.Not exactly lab results,but I think your remaining oil in your bottle was good.

 

Since it stinks you ain't gonna use it anymore? LOL

 

Maybe the oil people should add a "scratch and sniff" label on the bottles.

 

I have smelt it before and you are correct about the fear, er I mean GEAR oil smell. (Sorry I couldn't resist)

I'm a Mobil 1 man myself. I like that it is easily available at auto part stores and Wal-Mart.

 

I have a better one, stick your finger in it next time. Then have someone pull said finger and smell.

 

What 3 holes was it in?? Lol.. Maybe that was the problem. Someone might of had an oil fetish!
