As much as I would like to convince you otherwise, no there really isn't. It is pretty much fact that the evo is the better engine as far as factory build quality, and choice of materials and components, but both the evo and TC are well designed engines capable of high mileage.

The early T/C motors were far and away better overall motors than the EVO, much tougher lower ends and a way sturdier relationship at the junction of the engine/transmission.
The cam chain tensioners were the only real drawback and that was a pretty simple fix.

There were quite a few problems with crappy materials and poor build quality on the late 80's and early 90's EVO's, just as there are some pretty poor T/C motors in the newer bikes.
I can't even begin to count the number of cracked '89 thru '92 EVO cases that came through my shop, they were very weak around the Timken race in the left case.

I've owned several EVOs and TCs (only one 88) and have had good luck with all of them. I'm partial to the EVO because it was the engine that tipped me over to Harley from the Hondas I used to ride. In my mind, that engine along with the Softail line, saved the MoCo.
The 88's cam chain is fine, the correct issue you're talking about is the Tensioners and their wear the cam chain has upon them.. you need to replace the spring loaded tensioners and not the cam chain.
On the evo you had faulty "a" lifters untill the 97 or 98 models. Then the cam bearing was suspect
On the later engines. So the Evo had its faults too. Now I do like my early tc88b though😁
