Question Shipping From Hawii

Hello group,
I am leaving from Hawaii and needing to ship my bike. The moving company is saying that I have to drain the gas and run my motorcycle until it stalls. I have always understood that doing this is bad on the fuel pump and you should not do it.

What are your thoughts on this?

I am already i the process of traveling to New York From Hawa and need to explain to my wife how to drain the tank. Is it possible to get a picture or some instructions on how to do this on a 2014 Superlow with the 883.

Thanks for all the help.

Hi Roy,

I can understand an empty tank, but I'm with you on the pump. These "in tank" pumps depend on being immersed in fuel for cooling and running them dry can't be good for them.

Call your local HD dealer, I'll bet they've delt with this question before.

I've shipped 2 bikes (Texas to Hawaii and Hawaii to Maryland) and with each of them I just ran it low. I'm about to ship my softail from California to Virginia and will be doing the same. I'd just say let it get low and call it good. It should stay upright in transit...

Pull the fuse for the fuel pump and start it up till it stalls. Drain the gas. You did what they said..Maybe not in the correct order but how you should do it. Unless it has set a few hours, that should be done before pulling fuel line since under pressure, it can dislodge o-ring and then it leaks when you go back with the line. Even if you did what they say, there is going to be a few ounces in there anyway.

Shipped my shovelhead from NY to Maui and the back to NY in the early 90's all I did was run the gas tank low and disconnect the battery no issue at all.
