Gas is plentiful and non ethanol if you like. Eat at the Sugar Shack on 385 and Black Hills Burgers and Buns in Custer. Go to Mt Rushmore if you haven't been. Just ride like a sane person and you will be fine. Spearfish and Sturgis are small towns so not alot of shortcuts to be had. Plus the country is pretty why would you want to take a shortcut. The ride IS the journey.

In town be sure and do a complete stop at every stop sign and put both feet down. There are cops at almost every intersection. Don't drink and ride, if your are gonna party. Do as Larry says and ride DA Bus. We are staying in spearfish also. Here's a list of some good rides. https://travel.thefuntimesguide.com/...kota-rides.php
When you get in the area there are maps with different rides on them. They are almost everywhere up there. Search on google it has tons of info on it.

Grab a bite at Porkies adjacent to the Easy Riders Saloon on Main St, Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Lead, Spearfish Canyon, The Badlands (if time permits), Broken Spoke/Full Throttle, Black Hills HD in Rapid City, Stoneville Saloon in Alzada MT, Bear Butte mountain in Sturgis, Buffalo Chip.
Gas is plentiful but a bit more expensive but that's irrelevant. I almost ran dry leaving Belle Fourche to Alzada, Mt but you shouldn't have a problem. I carried a 1 gallon can in the saddlebag last time for peace of mind especially in the Badlands.
There's really too much to see in one trip that's why so many go back year after year. Have a great time and be aware of fast weather changes out there. The northern plains are no joke any time of year.

* Needles Highway
* Mt Rushmore Lighting Ceremony at dusk
* Sturgis at 8:00 AM . . . Empty Streets, go figure?
* Deer on the roads outside of town in the early evening.
* Look at everything at least once before you start spending any money.
* Do NOT Drink and Drive!
* Assume that everyone else you see on the road is seriously intoxicated.
