Why does it have a crack? How old is the tire?

If the tire is over 6 years old, I would replace it.

Drill a hole through the tire at each end of the crack so the crack won't propagate. If that doesn't work, replace the tire.
Just my $0.02

I expect Ron is referring to the date code (year and week) stamped into the side of the tire. You can google up a vid or pic in pretty short order if you're not sure where to look.

Good that you saw it. Now, it does not look like a cut so the other option is separation. If you ride mostly local then look at it every-time you ride. If you are a freeway rider then have it looked at now...
