Avoid Highway 1 California coast due to fires?
Hi all,
Just planning my road trip here and I see all these fires along highway 1 in california around Big Spur.
Should I avoid the following section?
I know hwy1 is open. Anyone from that area willing to chime in? How's the traffic? Smoke situation? Is it still worth it?
thanks

Traffic varies. I've been on that section with extremely heavy traffic, as well as virtually no traffic. Of course weekends are heavier.
I'm not certain how bad the fire is right now. You should be easily able to get a traffic advisory on the 'net. As long as the road is open, I'd say go for it. It really is one of the best section of Hwy 1. Going through Santa Cruz is a pain as it has a lot of signal lights. You can avoid some traffic through SF by taking Skyline blvd that hugs the coast, then turning back into town on the southern edge of Golden Gate Park.

Here's a link with the most up to date info on wildfires. Just pick California from the drop down state menu in the upper right corner and click on go. Then you can click on the fire name to get detailed info.

That road's a narrow two-laner til you hit Carmel.. It'll be packed with evacuations and emergency vehicles. I'd take 101 up to Salinas, there's a couple of routes over to Monterey from there. They're just a short ways. Do see Santa Cruz and the redwoods. At the intersection of 1 and 9 in Santa Cruz, take a right up 9, then at the ridge, left on Skyline, 35. Beautiful scenery and little towns, and nice twisties. I used to live in Boulder Creek.
