i do live in a state that lets me think i a have choice.
i always wear a helmet when i am on a crotch rocket. makes my eyes water if i do not wear helmet.
i do not wear helmet when on a cruiser with winshield. thats right, eyes do not water. i tend to have suicidal tendencies also.

I started riding in 2004. Before that I thought people who rode without a helmet were idiots. I used a FF until 2013. I bought a Bell 500, because I had started foregoing the helmet on hot days.
I could see why people liked riding without their helmet. It felt totally free.
I liken it to having sex without a rubber. Riskier, but feels a lot better. If you want to promote safety, a case could be made for outlawing motorcycles period.
However, whenever I have the urge to go helmetless, I think of my son. He's a paramedic. He picked up a biker in my town that crashed his Harley at about 30 mph. My son told me his brain was oozing out his ears. I picture that, and on goes my helmet.

I wear a helmet every time I throw my leg over the bike. I've worked in the ER and on the ambulance for a bunch of years, and we have 3 MC rallies a year. I've seen my share of motorcycle accidents.
I've picked up helmet-less dead folks that have been in a not too high speed accidents, I taken live helmet-less folks from high speed accidents to the ER, I've seen head injuries from folks in accidents that would have walked away if they had a helmet on. I've had helmeted folks die from crushing injuries when their chest got rode on, I've had helmeted folks die on me from blood loss when their legs were ripped off.
It's all a crap shoot, but if I add everything up I'll bet the helmeted folks have the advantage. BTW I live in a helmet optional state.

I choose not to wear one. A half helmet wont do anything unless you tip over at 5 mph and a full face is just too restrictive. If I had to ride around in a space suit all the time I would probably just drive the car. At least then I could roll the windows down and enjoy the weather.

Since opinions are being solicited, I'll offer mine.
Anyone who doesn't intuitively understand the pros and cons of helmet wearing, would probably gain little from wearing one.

I wear one if I'll be on the highway (FF) and leave it at home for just running around town/country roads.
I'm way more concerned with the other guy than I am with just crashing for the sake of crashing. Personal choice.

from another Michigander, I wear a helmet 99.9% of the time. started riding when we had an option back in mid-sixties. Had several incidents where I feel the helmet was right where it should have been....on my head. Now we are an option state again. I continue to wear my helmet because I feel more comfortable.
It always pains me to read about a biker going down and the first thing reported is whether or not he/she was wearing a helmet. Never mind a cage ran stop sign or turned in front of him. Helmets may or may not save a life. Just as a seat belt may or may not save a life.
I liken these threads to the which oil is better, or which glove should I wear, or which color is faster......

Don't wear one if I don't have to.
If I'm worried about safety that much then I just won't ride. I've seen people die with and without helmets.
What do you think keeps you more safe? A helmet or driving a car?

Why do helmet people always gotta put down people who dont wear them? Folks these days can't stand someone doing something different than they do. If they feel one way than darn it, that's the best way and any other way of thinking is just stupid.
