Just finished readind the 'cold weather coat' thread and wondered which pants are better for cold weather riding. Presently wear a set of padded Carhartt pants but a bit bulky. What say you guys ?...b.

How cold is "cold?"

The coldest it get's here in Central California is in the 30s. During the day in winter, low 50s, and 30s and 40s in the higher elevations.

I get by wearing either my "Draggin' Jeans" or my Dianese armored pants with underarmour "cold gear" bottoms under that.

The fleece lined Carhartts and a good pair of chaps will get you through most any temp. Within reason.

+1 on the chaps, but then again I'm in Cali.

The freeze-out gear works well too, but more of a hassle to put on and take off.

Default Winter Riding Pants

I use a pair of Gore-Tex pants as rain gear and winter riding pants. They are rain and wind proof and because of that they are warm. I wear silk long under wear and jeans under them. As long as I wear my heated jacket liner and heated gloves, my legs and feet have never been cold in the winter.
One of the things that heated gear does for you is reduce the number of layers you have to wear to stay warm. I have 3 layers on top and bottom and can still move well. It just makes riding more comfortable.

I like my LL Bean fleece lined jeans. I also wear a pair of REI mid-layer long johns if needed.
