What's it worth? 1977 FX Barn Find
Hello all,
Hope it's appropriate to post this here, if not a mod may delete or move as they wish!
I've never owned a Harley, but have loosely thought about getting one for some time now. Mostly want something just for more local riding and participating with friends who have them. I'm also inclined to get an older bike, I like to tinker and love older stuff in general. I collect International Scouts and pickups and am a body/paint guy by trade, so working on one does not scare me. I've just never been around them.
I just discovered my neighbors had this in their barn. It belonged to the wife's brother, they ended up with it and would like to pass it along. It is a 1977 FX, no electric start. They've had it since '05, it was last stickered in '93. It's not ran for a long time.... I suspect 20 years. It is not locked up, and seems to have good compression. The little digging around I did, there's some spare parts for it. I found 4 Bendix carbs in various states (it has a Bendix on it), a S&S super B carb with air cleaner, I suspect there's various other things laying around. She claims her brother had everything to add electric start. I did not see any stuff like that, but not sure what all I'd be looking for (starter motor, inner primary, and/or??). It's been primered, but seems to my limited knowledge to be basically original, and complete. Engine and frame numbers both match the title. Based on the info, and images, what's it worth? Given that it's a project, I don't want to get in it too deep, specially since I'm not familiar with them. Is there anything else I need to check out or take note of?
Thanks in advance!

That's not the stock tank, not the stock rear fender, not stock exhaust. Not stock seat. What it's worth depends on what you want to do with it. My first 'big bike' was a'77 FXE.
If I was going to buy it,I couldn't see more than $1500-2000. If it runs, maybe $2500. I say that because it basically is a mish-mash of parts. Not really worth putting back to original, but would make a nice project. I'd expect to spend another $2000 to make it dependably rideable.
Looking at pics again,I see an electric start inner primary.

All this stuff fascinates me. I figured the seat and exhaust had probably been changed, did not realize the tank and fender were incorrect... I did some reading and am a little unclear as to what tank should be on a 77 FX? I gather this has the "Fat Bob" tank? Is the speedo/tach console correct? I do see now the rear fender is different, what fender is on it? Thanks for all the education!

$2000 to $2500 depending what extra's you find, you guys and your $1000 are smoking dope a shovel basket in boxes with paper start at $1500 and up.
Likes been said bike isn't stock, lots been changed cosmetically but I don't see the usual goober rigged mechanical crap expect those pipes they have to go. Somebody did a little mixing and matching of FX and FLH parts so adding the starter isn't that big an issue, see complete used systems on Ebay fairly regular for them.
If you buy look to spend another $1 to 2k bringing it back to reliable riding condition, that said you'll happy you did nothing beats a well tuned shovelhead sound wise and they are always an eye catcher when out and about.
Run that same seat on mine , gotta be 30 plus years old. You buy post back in the shovelhead section , there's some good guys in there for advice and help.
