Great getaway ride...
Wednesday morning after the election at O'dark thirty (0555), my neighbor {friend, riding mentor and instructor}, Al and I hit the road. We left our homes north of Tucson for a ride over to San Diego {418 miles}, where we stayed on another friends boat on Shelter Island at the Silver Gate Yacht Club {I am a retired member}.
The weather was awesome except for the 25 - 30 mph easterly {Santa Ana}, winds that chased us across the Arizona/California desert and over the mountains and finally down into San Diego. The climb up from the desert floor west of Ocotillo and higher passes gave a little more excitement then we wanted. Arriving in San Diego on November 9th we were greeted by a high of 93 degrees down on the bay, 89 the next day and 84 on Friday.
We parked the bikes and enjoyed walking around Shelter Island {when we weren't lounging by the pool/spa}, for 3 days except for Veterans Day (Friday), when we rode up to Rosecrans National Cemetery where 101,079 veterans rest. We then continued on to Cabrillo National Monument at the southern tip of Point Loma touring the many exhibits there.
Saturday we rode north up I-15, taking full advantage of the car pool lane, all the way north of Escondido before turning east. We continued out through Valley Center, stopped at Harrah's {steak and eggs and couple of pulls on the slots}, at the foot of Mt Palomar. The weekend crowd of crotch rockets made riding up Palomar a bad idea so we continued east passing Lake Henshaw and through Ranchita before dropping down to Borrego Springs. Al is a retired CHP Motor Officer and he bought his BMW when he retired. Unfortunately they took away his blue lights and siren {we could have had some fun with those}. Here is a shot of our bikes at the overlook about half way down the 12 mile 8% grade to BS:
We picked up 78 east outside of BS and stayed with it all the way through Glamis {amazing sand dunes for miles}, before turning south on Ogilby Road to reconnect with I-8. It was a short ride to the Cocopah Casino outside of Yuma where we took a room for the night with dinner and "entertainment" at their Casino...
Sunday morning we headed out at 8 and were home by noon after a couple of stops for fuel and food. The trip log showed 953 miles and my 2010 Dyna SG averaged just under 50 mpg for the entire ride {we cruised the interstates at 72 +/- and about 65 on the two lane state highways}.
Had waaay too much fun with a great friend and riding buddy and we can't wait to head out again .
