Stator/Rotor/Voltage Regulator

Stator/Rotor/Voltage Regulator
So after diagnosing my 2003 Electra Glide Classic, it seems like my stator took a dump on me. (Only putting out like 5v @ 2000rpm)
I wanted to replace it myself ( kinda mechanically inclined ) but I've been reading a few articles and I'm at a 50/50 split!!!
My question to ya'll is do I need to replace just the stator? Stator and rotor? Or stator, rotor and voltage regulator?????

5v sounds like your stator has gone. Pretty easy to swap out. Pull outer primary cover, loosen primary tensioner, remove comp, pull rotor off, pull stator out. You can usually visually inspect the rotor to see if it's ok. Do a full diagnostic check. Make sure your connections are all good, as a bad connection could give you a low voltage output reading. Check out he sticky in the elect sub forum, has good info. Often a bad stator can take out the regulator, which can take out the battery, so depending on miles you may be better off to replace the regulator as well. Regulators are not real expensive, peace of mind is worth it IMO. Factory service manual covers the whole operation pretty well. Good luck, not difficult.

How many miles do you have on your '03?
The stator on my '00 died (without warning) at about 39,000 miles but the bike never needed a VR when I sold it at 77,000 miles so I'd suspect that you do need a new stator.
The VR went out on my '13 CVO Ultra this summer with about 26,000 miles but it did give me enough warning to get to the nearest dealership.
This could be related to the spate of bad regulators that the owners of the '12 model year touring bikes experienced.
