First, welcome to the site. Lots of good people here to help with problems and help with what to do. Lots of years of experience.
For ABS, better to and not need compared to need and not have.
I think especially with a new rider it is essential that you get it. You didn't grow up riding in the 70's learning how to ride with just a rear brake and then learn how to modulate brakes (from and rear) like lots of guys here.
When it comes to brakes, technology is your friend.

For sure, would not buy a bike nowadays without it. Please spare us the race pro's chiming in "if you got the skills you don't need it" If you ride your bike at 10/10ths at a race track all the time and are running at the top of your national caliber race class then maybe you don't want it on that bike.

Have you ever pushed a heavy item across a rug? Yes, it takes a little bit of effort to START the movement, but after you start it, it skids, and YES, it's easy.
So imagine this scenario when some douchebagge turns left in front you. You want to STOP, you dont want to SKID. It May save your life.
