Default Harley Credit application automatically releases info to Progressive Insurance?

I find this disturbing...

I was in my Harley Dealership, Adamec Harley in Jacksonville, Florida, very interested in perhaps pulling the trigger on a new 2017 Road King Special.

Did the credit application, which came back fine. A few days later, I get an e-mail from Progressive insurance (which underwrites for Harley), asking if I want to proceed with my motorcycle insurance quote. I asked for no quote from the dealer, or any insurance company. They have all my personal info: name, address, social security number, phone number, and obviously e-mail.

This concerns me. I did not authorize that dealer to look into getting an insurance quote for me. Makes me a bit irritated that they are sharing my information with some insurance company... Now of course, I already have motorcycle insurance, and it does happen to be with Progressive, but damn...

Does this just bother me, or are others concerned too?

that seems odd. Never had that happen when I've bought any vehicle, and more on topic I've bought 2 HDs.

I'd ask the dealer wtf

I asked the dealer - and my salesman said that that is their standard policy.

I'll call the manager... So called the sales manager, who said that whenever you apply for credit though HD, HD automatically sends a quote request to Progressive...

Hmm... I understand service to the customer, but still sounds wrong to me. It's like buying some cigars, and then the cigar company sends your info to a life insurance company for smoker's quote...

There might have been something in the paperwork you signed saying they could share certain information. If not, depending on what they shared, the dealer may have a problem (at least in some U.S. states -- are you buying in Japan?)

If in Japan, I'm pretty sure they don't have a "Fair Credit Reporting Act"!

I reckon HD Credit and Progressive have a deal where information is shared.
Id posthumously worry about the CEO of Progressive.

GEICO was cheaper than progressive for me anyway, give them a shout.

I agree, that sounds wrong to me. It's one thing to share a name and address which is public info. It's another to share a ssn

I was specifically told that Harley would give my information, and one of the dozen forms I signed was me acknowledging this fact. There was also an option where I could contact them in so many days and request my info not to be shared. This was in January of this year so maybe it's something new?

Bought my bike in July last year. New bike and financed through HD. This did not happen. Actually this dealership is small and really was not interested in insurance. We just called the company we were with, put the dealer on the phone with them and presto.

I think your situation was a DEALER thing and NOT an HD thing.
