Three things for me:
1.The cleaning of road grime off of my/our bikes.
2.The increased risks of either dumping my/our bikes.
3.Being hit by another vehicle because of poor visibility.
At the first of every riding season OI promise myself that I will NOT ride through heavy thunderstorms and torrential rains and then I find myself doing the very thing that I said I wouldn't do!
Several years ago, he wife and I headed towards the Skyline Drive with plans to continue on to the Blue Ridge Parkway and eventually end up going through the Smokey Mtn. Nat'l Park and the to SC to visit some relatives.
WRONG!!!
It was a cloudy, windy day and we expected some rain but what we ended up with was a heavy thunderstorm, wind, and fog which was further complicated by wildlife (as in deer" and a freshly spread layer of gravels in many areas of the SLD!
That 105 mile (35MPH speed limit) stretch of road took us just a tad over 5 hours to complete!
Once we got to Waynesboro, VA, we opted to head for the freeway and stopped by the H-D dealership to purchase a pair of the canvas, snapon "lowers" for my wife's Heritage (her feet were freezing).
Once on the freeway, the rain continued to pour, and perhaps I may have missed something (due to a lack of vision) but I don't remember seeing another bike/rider until we arrived in Gastonia, NC.
I will probably continue riding in the rain myself, but I will never encourage or allow my wife to ride in such horrible and unsafe conditions again.
