Remember walking into Yamaha dealer in the '70's? First thing you saw was a huge poster of Kenny Roberts with the #1 plate on the yellow and black. Look at Subaru. Subaru used to be known as the car of choice for tree huggers. Subie started sponsoring and developing cars for ralley racing - bingo, Subies are now cool with young crowd.

I heard from a young flat track racer the Harley ran out of cranks last year after so many broke.

MOCO wants to attract younger riders? What's the first you see walking into a dealership - a studded out Heritage. What MOCO needs, IMO, is a big ol' poster someone with the #1 plate on the orange and black and a new tracker replica on the floor. Indian put the R&D $$$$'s into a flat track specific motor, MOCO needs to step up.
Unless flat track motorcycle racing suddenly becomes the in thing to watch it won't have much effect on sales of HD or Polaris Indian motorcycles. I don't know any young person who watches it or anyone who actually follows it. I never hear it discussed or mentioned on the TV sports news, local newspaper or by any of the motorcycle owners I know, young or old. I also don't remember it being discussed much on this forum until Polaris Indian started winning and now there seems to be a post weekly, usually by a Polaris Indian owner.

And why would it be a factor for a person buying a HD or Polaris Indian motorcycle that has no similarities with a flat track racing motorcycle. Polaris Indian doesn't sell a flat track motorcycle to the public and neither does HD. Just because HD won a flat track race a guy is going to buy a Ultra Glide or 750 Street, I don't think so. It's really just for bragging rights and publicity which HD really doesn't need and Polaris Indian is desperate to get. That's why Polaris hypes the old rivalry aspect, they want to be noticed. If HD ceased flat track racing today and walked away, it wouldn't effect their sales and Polaris would eventually bail out too. It wouldn't fit their agenda.

I remember him talking in the early '90s at the North Turn about crashing out while leading the 200 in the mid '50s. Seems he was using a hot dog cart for a brake marker, and the vendor moved the cart.

A quiet self-effacing guy when I met him, very much like the racer in "On Any Sunday."

I think it's important given Harley's place in the motorcycle universe. I mean, they are the General Motors of motorcycles, and the real GM builds winners.
Well if your in St Louis then you are not far from one of the oldest and longest running Flat Track Races the Peoria National TT. This year in August.

Count up the GNC Championships that Harley Davidson has won.......sadly, most guys riding Harleys don't have a clue that Harley races flat track! Heck, most of the DEALERS don't even know!

KR750 Harley (my uncle raced one of these)

XR750 Harley

And what the factory HD guys are struggling with now (so far it's been a dog).....

XG750

Yes, I'm well aware of Harley's storied history of flat track. As a former flat track racer myself (T140 bored to 850 in a custom frame), I always wanted to get on an XR 750. My comment of "if they get some" was referring to this year and next. Seems the new XG750 has had some issues. Be nice to see the #1 plate back on a Harley.

Flat Track, Short Track and TT is the stuff of real men, Road Racing is a ballet of adrenaline, Motocross is the soccer of the motorcycle world, constantly on the go, absorbing great amounts of punishment. The midwest has lots of historic dirt tracks where you can see the motorcycles in action.

I grew up in Tacoma, WA. From the time I was about 12 on my dad would drop me and my buddy off at the flat track where we would watch them race all evening. Best memories of my life. it was the mid 60's and Amil Ahola had the #1 plate. I worked with him at a VW dealership and every so often on a Friday afternoon Evil Kenevil would pull in the parking lot in his Winnebego and everyone would get drunk on Everclear. I was only 17 then, but good times! Wish there was a flat track I could take my grandson to. Grew up on hill climbs to, but none hear me now. Oh well, on occasion I can still get drunk on Friday.

Friend of mine, #66, Geo Roeder, son of legendary George Roeder, and then #21, Jared Mees, crossed up at over 100 mph. Lima, Ohio 1/2 mile around 2008 or so. XR 750 Harley Davidsons!

Yep, flat track racing is a niche sport. Motocross and road racing have a direct correlation to the bikes on the showroom floors of the dealers that sell them.

I hope the MoCo keeps developing and improving the 750, and that the technology permeates the rest of the model line up.

Does anyone know if the problem with the XG is handling or horsepower or both?
