Default This could be a great way to do cross country

I've driven across the country multiple times in a car, but I've always wanted to do it on bike. The problem is I can never get enough time off to do it at a reasonable pace, considering the ride back. There's always shipping the bike back, but I kind of like the idea renting one and just flying back. This rental program on the HP looks like it could be a good way to do that. What do you guys think?

shipping your own bike back is cheaper than renting one for 2 weeks. However you do it, just DO it. Best vacation i've ever taken. 2 weeks across the country on the back roads is something you will always look back on and never forget. Had mine shipped back for $700. Rental would have hit that much in the first 4 days.

$700 doesn't sound bad. How long did it take for your bike to get back?

How do you ship your bike home? Who do you contact to ship it for you?

I've done a few fly-and-ride trips with rental bikes. The benefit is you get to the scenic riding roads, attractions, etc. faster, and there's no need to ship a bike home and hope it arrives undamaged.

Took them 1 week to have it in my driveway. I used Federal Motorcycle Transport. They have hubs all over the country.

For a cross country trip, something to consider is a strategy that a friend of mine uses with his RV. If you have a friend or relative who also wishes to make a similar trip [even if he/she takes a different route]. You ride 1-way, have your friend fly out and meet you at your destination. You fly back and your friend rides home. No "shipping" costs, no rental fees, no duplication of highways, 1/2 the time commitment.

Then again, if you want to ride something different from what you may routinely ride, the rental idea ain't bad. Here's my recent rental for a quick trip from San Francisco to Sonoma and Napa Valleys.

Very impressive! I got a great cross section of roadways: open freeway [101], stop & go freeway [101 - return], basic backstreets and canyon passes. Power was outstanding, handling was every bit as good as my '14 Ultra, 2-up we didn't bottom out once, some very tight corners I did not scrape a floorboard once, and despite being a few pounds heavier than my Ultra, the RM actually felt lighter. And the RM entertainment system blew the BoomAudio system away. If it was not for the 'in business today, out of business tomorrow' history of the company, I'd consider getting one in a heartbeat.
