Default Questions from a New Rider in Lubbock, TX.

Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie just wanting to hear about your experiences. While every riding experience may be valuable, was there a time or moment when something clicked? Or perhaps an advice or lesson you wish you learned when you just started? I'm all ears and would appreciate all advice. By the way, my current challenges are downshifting smoothly on a hydraulic clutch (which I think is pretty difficult).

Try rev-matching when you down shift.

I've been riding for a little over 10 years, and every day there's a valuable lesson learned.

Oh, and welcome to the forum and a to the motorcycle world.

Practice riding until you don't think about what you have to do to make the bike do what you want it to do. Just takes time and miles, large empty parking lots are your friend. Ride safe and welcome.

Nobody in a car sees you. Never forget that.

Expect the unexpected and have a plan when the unexpected happens.
Never, ever ride after consuming any amount of alcoholic beverages.
Situational awareness 110% of the time.
A left turner or someone pulling out of a driveway or side street is your primary threat.
Cover your brakes, roll off throttle if you aren't making eye contact with threats.
Practice threshold braking in a parking lot.

This is excellent advice.

I might also add "positioning". Always ride with motorcycle in the safest position in regards to other traffic on the road.

Every rule has an exception.
Some will see you and run over you anyway.

Oh yes, check tire air pressure frequently.

Don't wait for eye contact with cars ready to pull in front of you from side streets. Watch the front wheel. If it starts to turn, the car is moving and likely not watching you. Eye contact is too late. And as mentioned, cover your brakes, stay in the left side of the lane and watch your throttle.
