Default Rt 81 north of Roanoke. No Motorcycles.

So where thee end of a long trip heading north on 81. We see construction a head signs and then signs saying motorcycles must exit and take detour. Never saw that before

Antone travel thru there and know why or what they're doing that made it so bad for bikes.

We went through there in May heading to D.C. For rolling thunder. I was wondering the same thing.

Seems like I read online the grooving in the pavement was severe but never confirmed it. Hopefully someone has driven through in a car and will reply.

I can't help with that specific road but in other places I've seen signs suggesting motorcycles take an alternate route. It was due to uneven lanes and severe grooves during roadwork..

If it's just above Roanoke at the Troutville exit, it was probably the new loop they're making.

I saw a "no motorcycles" lane restriction on I80 east of Auburn a few months ago.
Road widening exposed a groove in the pavement that made it dangerous for motorcycles. Good call for Caltrans.

That Troutville exchange work is exit 150. VDOT is listing a motorcycle detour from exit 162 to 167. There is a lot of milling, repaving and bridge work in that area. Detours are scheduled on and off through Oct.

Roanoke resident here. VDOT is milling and repaving as well as extensive bridge work on NB I-81 above 150. I will advise that motorcycles follow the detour.

I like that the sign said "motorcycles must exit"
When I see "motorcyclists must exit" I exit even when
driving my cage.

Obedient fellow that I am.
