Wd-40

Why would you use WD-40 as a lubricant. Technically it's a penetrant for freeing up stuck bolts and displacing water - Water Displacement-40. Many things have been ruined by people thinking that WD-40 is a long term lubricant and protectant. It ain't.

WD-40's main ingredients, according to its U.S. Material Safety Data Sheet* information, are:
· 51% Stoddard solvent (i.e., mineral spirits: primarily hexane, somewhat similar to kerosene)
· 25% Liquefied petroleum gas (presumably as a propellant; carbon dioxide is now used instead to reduce WD-40's considerable flammability)
· 15+% Mineral oil (light lubricating oil)
· 10-% Inert ingredients

And when all that stuff dries and evaporates away it will have left an excellent surface for rust to work on.
You want to lube metal use a quality oil or grease. You want to protect a bare metal surface us GIBB Brand Penetrant.

The long-term active ingredient is a non-volatile viscous oil which remains on the surface to which it is applied, giving lubrication and protection from moisture
