Recommended mods for heavy load

More than you think. I live in a rural area where the roads are fairly curvy and they've replaced most of the stop signs with roundabouts. Besides, most of my riding will still be 1-up.

- A progressive (type not necessarily the brand) spring will be more comfortable.
- It will lessen the additional wear that the extra load will cause

As far as GVWR goes, it is as much about axles, bearings and the steering head and bearings. I'd make sure they were in good shape and properly lubricated.
Extra 5 pounds in the tires probably would not hurt. We ride two up, probably just at GVWR and keep our tires at 40/40. In my industry, we build in a factor of 150%, so the rated GVWR is a safe constant working load especially as the bike ages. If you keep up on maintenance, even 100 extra pounds is probably realistic enough.
Besides tires, keeping the brakes in peak condition is critical when weight is maximized. HD Shocks and or progressive fork spring add to comfort and enjoyment of the ride. Good seats are just as critical for comfort.
Added: New frames were beefed up in '09, so frame or neck issues, ie, cracking, welds breaking is not going to be an issue.
