Unfortunately, everyone's butt is different. What's great for one is hell for someone else.
If you can come up with a better way than you described, I'm sure many people here would love to hear about it.

Until we added the sheep pelt to the seat, my wife's tailbone was bugging her when we did long rides.
Adding a cushion like an Airhawk or a pelt may be a solution.
Our dealership has a huge selection of seats and they are super helpful in changing them out and letting you try them.
Other than that, ask around, like you are doing here and look for reviews.
I have heard good things about the Hammock seat.
