I own a HSTC (17), I owned a RK (15) and I own a RGU... If your touring or doing any serious 2 up riding, the RK has the HSTC in spades.. For solo or short runs, then you have a personal decision

Bullshit.

There are three or four tour paks in the parts and accessories catalog and online on Harley's site plus a couple of different mounting options.

A person needs to ride the bike themselves then decide. What works for one person might be terrible for another.

More weight capacity, more storage and you can add even more with the tour pack. But to me the RK just felt more solid on the road. The wind didnt blow it around as much as the Heritage. I thought the ride was even better. The dual front disc brakes on The RK were way better at stopping the bigger bike with a passenger The difference would be even greater. The King is built on a touring chassis and you have lots of options out there for touring accessories.
I went with the 17 RK and am happy with my decision. I think you would be happy with either bike you decide to go with. I would recommend you go ride both and pick what works for you.

That is exactly the info I'm looking for! Thanks! I do plan on test riding the new Heritage, but my local dealer does not rent (frustrating). The renting would provide more valuable insight by riding them hours vs. minutes.

I got to take each bike out for a mice long ride of about an hour. They didn't seem to mind at all.

It seems as though I was wrong in my statement about a tour pack on a Heritage. With that option it is still a no brainer for myselfc though your thoughts may differ from mine. Enjoy whatever you decide on.

There is something about that new Heritage that grabs me. Although to be honest, I haven't seen it in person yet. To me, for an extra $1200 or so for a 114 would be sweet. The biggest con to me looks like the gas tank size. I know you said your dealer doesn't rent, but it may be worth driving elsewhere to a place that does and try them out. Good luck man!

I'll be curious to see if the touring bikes get upgraded suspension now that the Softails have theoretically better suspension.
Travel length does not determine suspension quality.
A windshield does not compare to a full fairing for long distance comfort.
Touring bikes need a tour pack.

My thought. A Road King beats a Softail for touring.

But an Ultra is the answer if touring is the question.

I'm not a fan of the soft bags, they just seem to sink in on themselves over time.
