Default New engine or new bike?

Asking for a friend of mine:
His '08 Street Glide is at about 40,000 miles. He feels he should replace the cam chain tensioners, and if he is going to pay a tech to do that, then perhaps he should go all out and upgrade the 96 to the 103. An alternative he is looking at is to purchase a newer Hog.
Estimated costs (very rough):
Cam tensioner replacement: $1500 (all $ CAN)
Engine upgrade: $3500
2012 Hog with low miles: $15,000 - 20,000

Your thoughts?
Thanks!

I put a 103 in a 08 UC and I am more than happy.
Did require a tuner and had it Dyno'd just cause I wanted to.

do some cking 103's can be found very reasonable

Me, I would let my checkbook decide.
Never regretted buying a newer bike.
My 2011 Electro Glide is doing well, no plans to buy the next bike soon.
Have about $400.00 saved up now. Need a rear tire soon. Oh well.

You do not need a reason, or even an excuse. Just money.

I prefer the 96" to the 103" personally. If he's determined to go bigger I'd do the Fuel Moto 107" for about $2,200 installed and tuned (last I checked).

On U Tube you can see how to replace the tensioner and it looks pretty easy to do. Your friend could save himself much of his estimate.
This is just one of the videos

Does that price include a tuner and dyno tune? Just seems high to me. Have you checked into having this done on the US side?

I f you ae mechanical enough to own a torque wrench and the service manual watch a couple of you tubes and do it your self. It will give you a good feeling and keep some money in your pocket.

I'd like a bigger motor, but with a carb bike? Is one limited?

If your friend tours, new is better. Otherwise a basic HD 103 upgrade isn't too expensive; could even go with S&S E-Z starts and stock heads...or the HD drop on 110 with heads & cams. How fast does he want to go? That can be a long and expensive road to go down.....

Your thoughts?

That's a 96" engine, isn't it? Those hydraulic cam chain tensioner shoes should last a lot longer than 40K miles. What makes your friend think they need to be replaced? Has he even looked at them?
