Got my 518s on the old Road King
Put poly bushings under the risers, and a one piece clamp drilled and tapped for setscrews on top. A very solid feeling setup, and surprisingly, no vibration in the grips.
The ride feels a lot like a Duo-Glide, or a big Springfield Indian. Very comfortable for a touring setup. I thought the low speed handling might suffer, but if anything, its somewhat better.
I used a 3" over clutch cable, and that seems about right. The throttle cables and brake lines are 2" over. That's what I had on there before, for the 12" mini apes. You can see they reach straight from the controls to the headlight shell. If you wanted to route em differently, probably oughta go to 4" over.
The chrome control set is from KCINT on Ebay. $200. I was a tad dubious, because everyone else has the chrome sets for anywhere from $250 up to over $500. The stuff I got is well made, the chrome is deep and lustrous, and the controls work well. THe run/stop switch is a bit funky, but it works.
You have to assemble the switches into the shells, and that's a little tricky. Study your stockers, especially the throttle side around the brake light switch. The new one isn't identical, but you can see how the wires have to go to fit.
You'll have to crimp the pins onto the wires, you'll need a crimping tool with "U" shaped crimps. Takes a little fidding to get a nice crimp, but it beats getting an expensive tool for a single project. The Deutsch connectors were actuall pretty easy to work on.
I switched the wires for the horn and the left turn signal. Now, I've got the horn on the big easy to hit button under my thumb, and the turn signal on the little on that's a little harder to find.
Overall, very pleased with the project.
