Interstate highways are federal also but the states are responsible to maintain them. Has anybody ever seen a federal highway crew on these roads? Lol.
States get their share of highway money every year but I think the states decide how to use it. The National Park Service comes into play here too but I don’t know how much responsibility they have for the road. And I think they don’t get a lot of support from Congress anyway.

We live just over an hour from the PKWY. One of our favorite places to ride. Usually we are up there 3 to 4 times a month during the riding season. Normally riding between Hwy 21 (Sparta) to Hwy 421 (Near Boone). We like to go up to Stations Inn and Freebornes to eat lunch and look at all the bikes. On beautiful weekends there can be 2 to 3 hundred bikes there. Going North we have not been past Mabry Mill. But we have ridden from Hwy 18 all the way to Asheville and Cherokee several times.
The hidden gem is Little Switzerland! Great lunch stop, "Million $$$ View" and a great place for a nice overnight weekend at the Inn. And if you want some excitement head down the famous "Diamondback".
