Well I sure hope they do a better job and faster than the repairs between Hwy 18 and Hwy 21. It took forever and looks more like a patch job. Our government at work back under BHO.
Our Mustang club took a ride up there year before last. One of the guys shot this picture as we drove by. |
I've never ridden there but it looks like a beautiful stretch of road. Need to add that to the list of places to go for sure

It's easy to bit@h and moan about how bad the roads are and then do the same then they work on them.
At the same time complain about our taxes (I do). The old saying you get what you pay for comes to mind. Not sure how long that stretch of road is ...... If it just needs resurfaced or a full tear down and rebuilt or not. But either of those would cost a ton of money. Money the state does not have (normally in that budget). If the FED's are not paying then the states tax base has to.... |

Understood that it is a federal road but always wondered why that the Virginia portion is always better taken care of. Shame as I prefer the southern end. Eh, even with the detours it usually isn't too bad to deal with and hard not to like in spite of the disrepair.

The article notes a 3 month closure for the repairs and re-paving. However, I'll bet it takes closer to 6 months.

Rode it from it's start North of Cherokee over to US 70 east of Asheville around Oteen in 2001. The tunnels are kind of narrow. Got into one that was long and on a curve so that when you were in the middle you couldn't see anything behind you or in front other than the walls. Kind of a weird feeling. Almost hit a turkey. Great riding. This was during the summer and I still needed that jacket. I was by myself and the camera was on the seat of my bike for this picture.
