Hey all, im new to HD, just picked up a tricked out 1200lx 2007. The intake has no filter. It looks like dust and water can just shoot right into my engine...am I right? If yes, can you recommend what to install so this is correct? Figure Machines is out of busienss but I see plenty of parts on eBay. Might want to put a bona fide air cleaner on before your engine wears out prematurely. Best thing to do is get your engine oil analyzed for contaminants. Pay particular attention to "silica" content.
Since it's a new bike to you, this oil analysis should be part of your "due diligence" regimen anyway. They're about $20-$25. |

I know guys that run velocity stacks with no issue. I won’t run that type of setup but I won’t tell someone they shouldn’t. If you want a filtered intake setup, you’ll have to buy a whole new unit. That company also may make something that will bolt right up to that backing plate. You’d just have to remove the stack. |
The whole idea of an air filter is to do exactly what its name implies ... You've seen the effects of "sand blasting" ( yes I know it's a bit of an overstatement but point made ) on metallic objects. Over an extended period of time the same effects on your internal components ... Valve seats, guides and fuel delivery system.

Which should I buy?
Thanks for the info guys. Pretty certain I’m gonna put a proper intake on the bike.. makes sense that the engine will last longer if I do..plus I’m one of those crazy riders who likes be in the rain. Can you recommed a part from an online supplier? Preferably one that ships to Canada. Hopefully a part that is not expensive $$$ because I just bought the damn thing I like that parts just bolt on.. my last Italian bike was not like this...I had to use the one italian mechanic in town and wait 6-8 weeks because Guseppe in Italy would have to hand cut eevery part. |
I recommend DK Customs. They have a lot to choose from and you can have it set up to vent the hot, oily crap to atmosphere instead of back into the motor.

I would want to know how many miles that stack has been on the bike. The damage may already have started.
