Default S&S EVO 93" or 88" kit, which is it?

There is an S&S Sidewinder Big Bore Kit for sale and the price is OK, but there are some things that don’t quite add up… The instructions he has have a revised date of 7/7/1999 but the current instructions from S&S are revised 10/15/2003 so the kit is at least two years old. The second thing is that he states it is a 3-5/8 Big bore 4-1/2 stroke cylinder kit complete, however he does not list any flywheels in the kit and has responded that it is only the pistons and cylinders. As we all know the stock stroke of a 80 cu in EVO is 4-1/4, yet he insists that by changing the pistons and cylinders alone the stroke will be increased… I contend that if you install only the pistons and cylinders you will have a 87.73 cu in engine and the compression ratio would be around the 9:1 vicinity. Oh yeah, he also states that the compression ratio would be 10:1, but in the S&S sheets it lists the 93 cu in stroker kit with the 3-5/8 bore X 4-1/2 stroke and a 9.5:1 compression ratio.
What do you guys think? What else might be missing or wrong with this 2+ year old kit?

Default RE: S&S EVO 93" or 88" kit, which is it?

He is full of it as far as stroke goes. Pistons and cylinders will not increase stroke. If the crank length doesn't change, then the stroke doesn't change.

Is this a kit that just changes heads, crank and cylinders and uses the same cases? If so, you want to do a lot of checking around. A friend of mine wanted to go to 95 inches on his EVO to better pull a side car, and found that it required machine work on the cases, which in turn weakened them. The mechanics around here were of the opinion that 88 inches on an EVO was about max for dead on reliability as that was all you could get with out stroking, and stroking required machining.

This is not information I know to be fact, just what we were told by some mechanics.

Regards,

Bill
