Default Hi new boot from New Jersey w/questions

as an owner of a 2002 standard,204 road guide with a 124 Jim’s kit and driven a standard police bike I have some new boot questions before dropping cash. I haven ride since 2006 when I came down with a muscular illness that left me wheel chair bound and forced to sell my bikes. Now that I’m better and a little stronger I want to see if I can ride. I’ve been looking at road guides around 2002. In my area there going for around $6,000. Most of these tc 88 are in the mileage area for a cam and Bearing job or more. Given the price of a bike and a rebuilt cost it places old bikes in an area were there not worth it. Do you rebuild an old engine replace it with a hd new engine or an S&S or other more powerful and better built engine. Or just say screw it that that cash and buy a newer motor with the larger motor and lates updates like a 2007 or newer.
Any help in this area please.

I understand that Harley came up with the new frame in 2009. I would start looking there. Just my $0.02...

Given you're previous illness, do you really want to jump right back into it with a 900lb bike?

How about renting one for the weekend and see if you really want to buy one. If you do, and you know for sure, then go buy what ever your heart desires, simple as that.

I’d say it might be best to start at your roots. Get a Sportster and work your way back to the top with a Road Glide!! #1 Shark Nation!

By the time you spend all the money for the bike and the rebuild you're going to be in "newer" bike price ranges. I would just look around for an 09 or newer touring bike. Around my area there are literally hundreds on Craigslist and Cycle Trader with low miles in the $8000 to $9500 price range.

Go to a dealership that will let you test ride bikes. Have to agree with your condition that a touring bike may be a bit too much but you don't give us much to go on.

There are plenty of excellent 5 speed 88s out there, that already have the Tensioner upgrade, and they are under $9k. I wouldn’t trade my ‘03 for a new bike.

The only reason I would get a new bike is to have everything new, and under warranty, so the worst idea is to buy an old bike, and blow money on a big engine.
